I watched Yellowstone and now I want to throw out my entire wardrobe and dress like a Cowboy
In our house, there's always an argument about what to watch; like most families, we all have such conflicting tastes that finding something we can watch together leaves us with few options—my mother's taste orbit around the Downton Abbey vibe of drama. Where the tensest thing that's allowed to happen is an heiress choosing between two suitors, my brother, on the other hand, isn't a fan of anything "too talky" Characters for him should be on the verge of excessive amounts of violence if not engaged in them presently. My father isn't a fan of anything "too unrealistic", nothing that's too outlandish apart from a love of Westerns he inherited from my Grandfather. Me tho, I'll watch anything. So long as it has an engaging story, from 'Heat' to 'Some Like it Hot,' I'll watch it if its characters are compelling, its plot is gripping, and its writing exhilarating.
Therefore one of the only things that kept us all happy was 'Yellowstone' on Paramount Plus, the western rancher series. It has all of the above and more there's a family drama, action and plenty of, as my brother puts it, "cowboying", which is his favourite part of the show. The series is a modern Western drama series that follows the Dutton family, who control the largest contiguous ranch in the United States, and their battle to defend it against those who would seek to take it away. Kevin Costner stars in a career-defining role as the clan patriarch alongside a diverse cast of characters.
It could be the sweeping vistas of the Montana wilderness or the gritty, raw performances by the cast, but the whole family loved it, and the entire time, the most recurring thought I had was, "God, I need more levis".
Many evenings after finishing a binge of a few episodes, I found myself mindlessly scrolling on shopping websites comparing the prices of different brands of Cowboy boots while my GF was doing her nighttime skincare routine, closing the tabs on my browser quickly before she could spy what I was one again comparing Tecovas boots to Wrangler's.
As a fashion lover, I've never been able to keep myself to a single style. Instead, I regularly jump between classic and contemporary. Still, after five seasons of Yellowstone, it's taken all my willpower not to throw out my entire wardrobe and invest in ranch-worthy denim and Carhartt jackets. And not the WIP Carharrt I see daily from my fellow latte-sipping urban creatives. I'm talking about actual genuine work wear Carhartt worn by real men.
It could be the sweeping vistas of the Montana wilderness or the gritty, raw performances of the show's cast. It could be the intricate embroidery on the women's dresses or the practical yet stylish jackets worn by the men. Whatever the reason, "Yellowstone" has inspired me to trade in my current wardrobe for a whole new look.
But something about the simplicity and durability of Western wear has struck a chord with me.
A good pair of boots, a rugged leather jacket, and a sturdy belt are the staples of Western style, and they offer both practicality and style in equal measure. And the intricate details often adorn Western clothing - the fringe, the beading, the embroidery - add a sense of personality and flair that is hard to find in other styles.
Of course, embracing Western style isn't just about your clothes. It's about adopting a certain mindset, a sense of adventure and self-reliance often associated with the American West. Watching "Yellowstone" has made me want to explore this mindset deeper, to embrace the spirit of the frontier and all it represents.
But where to begin? As a city dweller, I can't dress head-to-toe in cowboy gear and expect to blend in. Instead, I'm taking a more subtle approach, incorporating Western elements into my wardrobe. A pair of cowboy boots with a sleek suit and a denim shirt with chinos are just a few ways I'm bringing a bit of Western flair into my everyday style.
And it's not just me - western wear is having a moment in the fashion world. Western-inspired clothing is everywhere, from the runways of major fashion houses to the streets of urban centres. And while some argue that it's just a passing trend, Western wear has a timeless quality that will never truly go out of style.
So, as I say goodbye to my old wardrobe, I'm excited to embrace this new chapter in my fashion journey. Who knows where it will take me? But one thing's for sure: with my new western wear in tow, I'm ready for any adventure that comes my way.
